Paul Covert

Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Paul Covert is a professional trombonist and educator living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Growing up in a musical family, Paul’s first musical experiences involved singing in the church choir and performing as a solo pianist as young as age 9. He began playing trombone at age 12 and continued his musical involvement in his school and church throughout his youth. These activities included performing as a piano accompanist for both school and church choirs, playing percussion in his school’s indoor drumline, and playing a variety of brass instruments in the basketball pep-band.

Paul recently graduated with a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas, and spent two years studying with Professor Nick Finzer. During his time at UNT, Paul played in the Grammy nominated One O’ Clock Lab Band®, performing on the studio albums Lab 2023 and Lab 2024.

Before moving to Texas, Paul studied Music Education at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was an involved classical trombonist throughout his time at the university. Some of his accomplishments include performing as a finalist in the James Madison
University Concerto/Aria Competition and placing third in the North American Brass Band Association Solo Contest.

Paul taught countless private lessons to students of all ages during both of his degrees. While a masters student, he taught many private lessons in the Dallas Independent School District. These lessons were designed to give younger students extra instruction on their instrument, as well as
help them develop a love for music. Paul also taught in both middle and high school classrooms during his undergraduate, and worked with students with a variety of needs.

He currently teaches at The Dallas School of Music and performs frequently in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
