Joel KarnerJoel R Karner, born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, began music lessons at the age of eight. By age ten, he had formed his first band, and then several other ensembles and solo for performances on stage, radio, competitions, museums, parties, and coffee houses.
For his undergraduate studies, he attended the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago where he double-majored in piano and composition (guitar, first instrument) studying with Jack Goode, William Ferris, Alice Angermann, and M. Dean Kincaid. On a full fellowship, he attended Columbia University in New York and graduated with a Master Degree in Composition where he studied with Stanley Wolfe (Juilliard), Jeff Talman, David Rackowsky, and Steven Mackey. He served as Music Director for 25 years in New York, New Jersey, and Washington DC. Because of his many years of experience, Joel specializes in all age groups but especially high school and upward. Adults who always wanted to learn an instrument are often surprised to find out how skilled they really are if only they would simply make the effort. He lives by the motto: “I’ll meet you where you’re at, and take you where you want to go!” The Dallas School of Music
