Evan OxenhandlerA native of St. Louis, MO, Evan has been professionally teaching and playing music since the age of 18. While attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Evan had the privilege of studying with such guitar giants as David Gilmore, Mick Goodrick, Garrison Fewell, Sheryl Bailey, and Tim Miller. As a graduate fellow in the University of North Texas’ renowned jazz studies program, Evan held the guitar chair in the Grammy nominated One O’clock Lab Band.
Since then, Evan has shared the stage with jazz artists such as Mike Stern, Paquito D’Rivera, Molly Ringwald, David Sanborn, and has been featured as a guest soloist with the UNT Symphony and Abilene Philharmonic. An avid performer and educator, Evan’s passion for his work in the field of music education has given him the opportunity to apply his knowledge of music in new and creative ways. He has served on the music faculties at Brazosport College, San Jacinto College, Alvin Community College, and Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. In addition to creating and implementing curriculum, Evan has composed audition material for the Texas All-State jazz competitions, served on the editing committee for W.W. Norton publishers, and created and managed the Jazz in June summer education series at Brazosport College. While Evan’s first musical love is jazz, he is a student of many styles. He firmly believes that well roundedness is a cornerstone of good music education, and seeks to demonstrate new and creative ways to approach music and learning. Evan’s students will become well versed not only in jazz and its related fields, but also in the language of music itself. The Dallas School of Music
